-
Pickleball paddles act like small soundboards.
-
When the hollow ball hits the paddle’s stiff, flat surface, it creates a quick burst of vibration.
-
That vibration pushes air in a way that produces the signature “pop-pop-pop” sound.
-
The sound has a high pitch, which our ears naturally find more noticeable and irritating.
-
“Quiet balls” don’t eliminate noise; they only reduce it.
-
Many public parks struggle to enforce quiet-ball rules.
-
Some players ignore softer balls because they bounce differently and slow down play.
-
Strategic court placement away from rooms or quiet spaces
-
Sound-dampening fences and windscreens to reduce echo
-
Designated play hours to respect guests and neighbors

TL;DR: Carmel, CA recently passed a full pickleball ban after years of noise complaints. Players asked why pickleball is so loud and whether quieter balls could help, but the city decided enforcement was too difficult. Palmas Pickleball Resort explains the issue, the science behind pickleball noise, and how quiet-play options can reduce conflicts.
Pickleball Ban Carmel – The Noise Debate and Why It Matters
Pickleball is one of the fastest-growing sports in the country. But with that growth has come a surprising challenge: noise. At Palmas Pickleball Resort, we believe it’s important to talk honestly about these issues, especially as more cities deal with concerns similar to those in Carmel, CA.
Recently, Carmel made headlines by choosing to ban pickleball altogether at its only public courts. The city had already put a temporary stop to play due to ongoing noise complaints, and after testing quieter paddles and balls, officials decided the noise was still too disruptive for nearby residents. They also said enforcing the use of “quiet equipment only” would be nearly impossible.
And just like that, the “Pickleball Ban Carmel” became a reality.

Why Is Pickleball So Loud?
A lot of players don’t realize why the game sounds so sharp and attention-grabbing. But there’s real science behind it.
So even though pickleball isn’t the loudest sport, its sound carries far, repeats often, and can echo into nearby homes. That’s why so many people ask, “Is pickleball noisy?” — and the honest answer is yes, it can be.
Are There Quiet Pickleball Balls?
Yes — and no.
There are quieter balls and paddles designed to reduce the sharpness of the impact. Soft, foam-style balls and paddles with noise-dampening cores can noticeably reduce volume.
But here’s the catch:
This is why cities like Carmel say quieter equipment alone isn’t enough to solve the problem. In fact, most players refused
Still, at places like Palmas Pickleball Resort, offering quieter play options is a smart and friendly move that helps reduce conflicts before they start.

What The Carmel Pickleball Ban Means for Resorts Like Ours
As pickleball grows, resorts must plan carefully. The Carmel situation shows how quickly noise complaints can escalate if steps aren’t taken early.
At Palmas Pickleball Resort, we believe in a balanced solution:
When resorts lead with respect, education, and smart design, pickleball stays fun for all!
Final Thoughts
The “Pickleball Ban Carmel” is a major moment for the sport. It shows that as pickleball grows, the community must grow with it — especially when it comes to noise. By understanding why pickleball is so loud, exploring quieter ball options, other noise mitigation techniques, and planning thoughtfully, we can keep the joy of the game alive without disturbing those around us.
